What Actually Helps Kids Succeed at School: 10 Factors You Can Influence

When a child struggles at school, the conversation almost always lands on studying itself: practise more, do the homework properly, maybe get a tutor. Yet a surprising amount is decided before the child ever sits down at the table — how they slept, whether they ate something sensible, whether they feel safe, and how the afternoon is organised.

None of these factors is a miracle cure. But they are the ones parents, teachers and eventually the child actually have a hand in — unlike talent, class size or the curriculum. Here are the ten where the effort pays off most: what sits behind each one, and a single thing you could change this week.

😴 1. Enough sleep — and on a regular schedule

Sleep has the best effort-to-effect ratio of anything on this list, and it is the first thing families sacrifice. A meta-analysis covering roughly a century of research finds clear associations in school-age children between sleep duration, sleep quality and school performance. The reason is unglamorous: attention, working memory and the overnight consolidation of what was learned all depend on it. And an overtired child rarely looks tired — they look fidgety, irritable or unfocused.

In practice: a fixed bedtime that also holds at weekends (shift it by an hour at most), the last half hour screen-free, and no device in the bedroom. If you want to move bedtime, move it in 15-minute steps rather than all at once.

🍎 2. Food that carries through the morning

This is not about superfoods, it is about basics: regular meals, enough protein and whole grains, fruit and vegetables, water instead of sweet drinks. The best-studied single piece is breakfast — reviews find consistent short-term effects on attention and memory during the morning, most clearly in children who would otherwise arrive at school hungry.

In practice: a breakfast your child will actually eat beats the perfect one that stays on the plate. A mid-morning snack with some protein carries further than a pure sugar spike at ten o'clock.

⚽ 3. Movement and sport

Regular physical activity is associated with better attention, better executive function and — more weakly, but measurably — better school results. The effect is no miracle, but it costs nothing and pays into sleep and mood at the same time.

In practice: outside every day, ideally without performance pressure; walking or cycling to school counts. And 20 minutes of movement before homework usually does more than 20 extra minutes of sitting.

👪 4. Parental interest and support

Of everything parents can do, the thing that works best is the thing that looks least like school. A large meta-analysis on parental involvement finds the strongest associations where parents communicate expectations, talk with their child about school and read together — not where they supervise or take over homework.

In practice: "What was interesting today?" instead of "Have you done your homework?". Interest in the subject beats control over the task. How real motivation grows out of that is covered in more depth in motivating children.

📝 5. A workable setup and routines

A child who has to renegotiate every day when and where homework happens spends part of their energy just getting started. Fixed time, fixed place, device out of reach, tasks broken into small steps: it sounds trivial, but it removes exactly the friction that wrecks afternoons.

In practice: clear the table before starting, keep only one task visible at a time, and take a real break after 20 to 30 minutes — stand up, don't scroll.

💛 6. Emotional safety

Children learn badly when they are afraid: of the test, of being embarrassed in front of the class, of the reaction at home. Programmes that deliberately build social and emotional skills improve not only behaviour but also academic achievement in a large meta-analysis. The reverse holds too: a child who believes they are stupid protects themselves — they would rather not try than try and fail anyway.

In practice: treat mistakes out loud as normal, comment on the effort rather than the grade, and when a result is bad, listen before you evaluate.

📖 7. Reading and language

Reading volume is one of the few factors that shows up in almost every subject. Vocabulary, a feel for language and general knowledge come largely from reading and being read to — and those are exactly what a child later needs for non-fiction texts, word problems and exam questions. A meta-analysis on print exposure finds associations with vocabulary and comprehension across the whole school career.

📱 8. Choose screen time deliberately

Screen time is nearly always discussed as a quantity. Two other questions matter more: what does it displace — and what is happening on the screen? A meta-analysis on media use and academic performance finds exactly that pattern: television and non-educational gaming are associated with slightly weaker results, while total screen time on its own barely is. What reliably hurts is fairly well defined — screens that eat into sleep, devices in the bedroom, and several media running at once during homework.

What follows from that, for us, is not "as little as possible" but "as deliberately as possible". If your child is going to spend half an hour on the tablet anyway, the real question is which half hour it is. Short daily rounds in a good learning game are precisely the kind of practice that otherwise never happens at home: spread across many days, in small portions, with instant feedback. Distributed practice is one of the best-established learning principles there is, and in a randomised trial with maths apps, children doing short daily app sessions learned measurably more than the comparison group.

We build two such games ourselves, and we will say plainly what they are and are not: they take over the repetition part — letters, words, mental arithmetic — not the understanding, and not the shared book on the sofa.

📖 ABC Smash — reading practice in short rounds

Letters, syllables, everyday words, the 250 most frequent words, adventure lessons and "read and answer" — in short daily rounds, in eight languages, offline in the car and on the plane. For children from roughly 5 to 12.

⚔ Math Fighter — mental arithmetic as a duel

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in short fights, with a belt system running from white belt to black. Short rounds, instant feedback, difficulty that climbs with the child. For children from about 6.

In practice: agree the media rules in advance instead of arguing afterwards, keep the last hour before bed device-free, no devices in the bedroom, one screen only while studying — and reserve a fixed slice of what is left for learning games. 🎯 9. Independence and self-regulation

Planning, setting goals, sticking with something, judging your own work: these are learnable skills, and among the most valuable things a child can take with them. Meta-analyses on self-regulated learning find clear effects as early as primary school — provided the child is actually allowed to do it themselves.

In practice: let them pack their own school bag (even when something goes missing once), have them plan briefly before homework ("what will you start with, how long do you need?") and look back for two minutes afterwards. Don't take every task off their hands — the skill grows exactly where you manage to do nothing.

🏫 10. The teacher relationship and being there

The relationship with the teacher is not a soft factor. A meta-analysis shows that positive teacher–student relationships are associated with more engagement and better achievement — most strongly for the children who are already having a hard time. And regular attendance is the least glamorous prerequisite of all: missed lessons add up faster than it feels in the moment.

In practice: make contact early rather than waiting, bring observations rather than diagnoses, and always fix a concrete follow-up in six to eight weeks. A "let's see how it goes" with no date turns into a lost school year remarkably quickly.

✅ If you only change five things

Changing everything at once works in no family. If you want the list boiled down, we would start here:

  • Sleep rhythm — fixed times, enough hours, no device in the room.
  • Food and movement — a breakfast that actually gets eaten, and outside every day.
  • Less pressure — comment on effort, not the grade; when there are tears, the day is done.
  • Daily reading — 10 to 20 minutes, topic before level, keep reading aloud.
  • Routines and deliberate screen time — fixed place, fixed time, and part of the screen time spent on a learning game.

If you take on one single thing: sleep. It improves the other nine as a side effect.

⚖ What this article does not claim

These factors raise the odds; they do not guarantee good grades. Individual ability, health, the quality of the teaching and a family's circumstances all play a part too — and much of that cannot be sorted out at the kitchen table. So please don't read this as "weak school results can be fixed with more discipline and a better breakfast."

Most of the associations here also come from observational studies: children who sleep well have better grades on average, which does not automatically mean an extra hour of sleep raises a grade. The direction is plausible and consistent, but the effects are usually moderate. And if a child keeps struggling despite all of this, that is not a character problem — it is the moment for a proper assessment, via the teacher, the paediatrician or an educational psychology service.
